The more technical name for this type of clock is the longcase clock, but the name grandfather clock stuck after the song My Grandfather’s Clock, written in 1876. And there is something grandfatherly about this tall, elegant device with its long, swinging pendulum. Or perhaps it’s just because we feel every grandfather has one – or should have one!
